Brad Sherman Of Charlestown Wins Another 1st Place In National Wildlife Refuges Photo Contest

The Friends of the National Wildlife Refuges of Rhode Island have announced the winners of their 26th annual amateur photo competition.

Contestants were asked to submit photos taken on one of the five National Wildlife Refuges in Rhode Island. The Refuges are Ninigret NWR in Charlestown, Trustom Pond NWR in South Kingstown, John H. Chafee NWR at Pettaquamscutt Cove in South Kingstown and Narragansett, Sachuest Point NWR in Middletown and Block Island NWR.

The “Best of Show” has been awarded to “Twins” taken by Skylar Dunn of Pawtucket, RI taken at Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge.

The winners in the four different categories are:

Flora

  • 1st place: “Thistle and Monarch” by Brad Sherman of Charlestown, RI taken at Trustom Pond NWR
  • 2nd place: “Silhouettes” by Monica Soare of Wynantskill, NY taken at Block Island NWR
  • 3rd place: “Golden Flower Show” by Pam Marsden of Bristol, RI taken at Sachuest Point NWR

Wildlife:

  • 1st place: “Scrap and Scrape” by Skylar Dunn of Pawtucket, RI taken at Sachuest Point NWR
  • 2nd place: “Twin Shadows” by Carmen Rugel of Middletown, RI taken at Sachuest Point NWR
  • 3rd place: “Peek” by Skylar Dunn of Pawtucket, RI taken at Sachuest Point NWR

Wildlife Habitat/Landscape

  • 1st place: “Quiet Coastal Path” by Alison Lohrum of Newport, RI taken at Sachuest Point NWR
  • 2nd place: “Sea Foam” by Frank Lotito of Middletown, RI taken at Sachuest Point NWR
  • 3rd place: “Tansy Under Sturgeon Moon” by Alison Lohrum of Newport, RI taken at Sachuest Point NWR

Children under Age 14 – Any Subject on a Refuge

  • 1st place: “The Morning Snail” by Claire Walsh of Severna Park, MD taken at Trustom Pond NWR
  • 2nd place: “Morning Breeze” by Andrei Picu of Wynantskill, NY taken at Block Island NWR
  • 3rd place: “Dewy Berry” by Claire Walsh of Severna Park, MD taken at Trustom Pond NWR

All the entered photos will be on exhibit at Sachuest Point Visitors Center in Middletown from Saturday, September 19 to October 3 and then displayed at Kettle Pond Visitors Center in Charlestown from October 4 to October 19.

The Friends of the National Wildlife Refuges of Rhode Island is a volunteer member-based nonprofit organization devoted to conservation and development of healthy habitat for flora and fauna at Rhode Island’s National Wildlife Refuges, and to safe, accessible, ecological experiences for refuge visitors. The Friends group helps secure funds for and works on refuge projects designed to meet the goals of the US Fish and Wildlife Comprehensive Plan for Rhode Island’s 1800 acres of federal refuge habitats.
