Give Food for Christmas

The holidays are rich in good food and drink. We shouldn’t forget to thank the farmers who make it all possible nor forget those who sadly experience hunger this time of year.

Give Thanks to Local Farmers

The Charlestown Land Trust Farmers’ Market is no more, but look for other opportunities to support our local farms. The Charlestown Agricultural Preservation Committee maintains a list of local farms. These farms produce fresh, locally grown and produced fruits, vegetables, eggs, meats, cheese, flowers, honey and more. Check out their farm stands for gift giving ideas.

Provide Food For the Hungry

Rhode Island Center Assisting those in Need (RI CAN) – Established in 2001 and now located in the village of Carolina, RI CAN provides emergency food and outreach to thousands of at-risk residents in southern Rhode Island and beyond. Since piloting the Food Rescue Program in 2011, RI CAN has rescued hundreds of thousands of pounds of surplus food from Walmart and others and made it available to those who have trouble affording nutritious food.

Birds Get Hungry Too

Friends of the National Wildlife Refuges of Rhode Island – Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuges provide resting, feeding and nesting habitat for more than 250 bird species. The Friends provide support for many projects, one of which is to raise money to fill the Refuge birdseed feeders. The feeders help support the birds through the winter when wild foods are scarce.

Stray Animals Have A Wish List

Friends of the Charlestown Animal Shelter – Did you know that all the animals at the Charlestown Animal Shelter have an account with Chewy all year round? They would love some great treats to enjoy while they wait for their permanent homes. You can see information about some of the pets waiting for homes at the Charlestown Animal Shelter on petfinder,
