Charlestown Named The Most Charming Small Town In Rhode Island
The travel magazine Afar has named Charlestown the most charming small town in Rhode Island. They describe Charlestown as “a town best known for its golden-sand beaches, hiking and biking trails, and the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge, a magnet for migratory birds.”
Also mentioned as attractions were Watchaug Pond and Burlingame State Park along with The General Stanton Inn, the Sly Fox Den Too restaurant, the Fantastic Umbrella Factory, and the Purple Shell boutique.
How long Charlestown can preserve that charm is however in question. If Ninigret Park is developed as planned, if housing development speeds up, and if the current Town Council continues their block on exceptional land conservation projects, Charlestown’s character and ability to support viable wildlife habitat may be severely diminished.

Thanks to CCA for this news item and for all your hard work over the last 10-12 years to keep Charlestown as the gem that it is and that so many of us moved here because of its gem-like character. We hope that it can be maintained.

Yet another reason to vote for a new set of Town Counsellors next year except for Susan Cooper, if she decides to stay. All the progress our town has made in the previous 10 years is slowly being undone. Remember the story of the frog in the kettle. The heat is slowly turned up and the frog has time to jump out. But there comes a time when it is too late! There are changes happening now in zoning, planning, land use etc that cannot be reversed.
