Charlestown for years has been talking about a coastal bike route that would link Westerly, Charlestown, South Kingstown and, ultimately Narragansett. This is a big vision, but it could be accomplished one piece at a time. As a result, the town has been looking at designs for one portion of the vision–a bike path from Ninigret Park to the traditional village district to the South Kingstown line at Matunuck School House Road. Part of the design process involves choosing one option that residents prefer from three proposed by the town\’s consultant. When residents make the choice that they prefer, Charlestown will be ready when the state begins to plan any reconstruction of all or part of Post or Old Post Road. This will allow Charlestown to get the transportation improvements it wants using state and federal funds.

Current bike and pedestrian traffic on Charlestown Beach road is dangerous enough as is. The town must address this issue first. My fear is nothing will be done until there is a horrendous accident. Either to a biker or walker or to cars swinging out into the road to avoid them.

Post Rd. and Old Post Rd. were recently redone by the state. I understand the need to have a plan ready to take advantage of state and federal funding so why wasn’t this proposed prior to both roads being redone. Is there a timeline for Post Rd. and Old Post Rd. to be done again??? My guess is not for many years!

I have not been in the town long. This is my third year. I know South Kingstown redid part of rt1 but other than repaving nothing major has been done in Charlestown since I have been here.
My question would be when is the expected work to be done on RT 1? Is there a schedule for this?
