Faith LaBossiere: Charlestown has been given a holiday gift

The following letter appeared in local newspapers and is shared with us here by the author Faith LaBossiere. Faith LaBossiere is a past member of the Charlestown Planning Commission and a current member of the Parks and Recreation Commission.

Charlestown has been given a holiday gift. A corporate giant, Dollar General, decided to withdraw its appeal of the Planning Commission’s denial of their master plan for RT. 1A and Narrow Lane.

Dollar General’s misguided plan begs the question “did they think they could ramrod over our Planning Commission, the Traditional Village District zoning guidelines (so carefully crafted by Planning) and the Historic District?”  What makes a corporation believe they have a right to force on a community an ugly chain store they do not want? It is comforting to know Charlestown may look like small potatoes to Dollar General. They learned we are small, but also determined to protect what we hold dear.

Thank you to all the residents who showed up for meeting after meeting. Hats off and a huge thank you to our Planning Commission and its indefatigable chair Ruth Platner. This is just one of the Commission’s major efforts to protect our town in the last two years.

With graditude,

Faith LaBossiere
