Dollar General Withdraws Appeal Of Planning Commission Denial!
On August 10, 2018 the Charlestown Planning Commission denied the application for Development Plan Review for a Dollar General store on the corner of Old Post Road and Narrow Lane in Cross’ Mills.
Planning Commission decisions are appealed first to the Charlestown Zoning Board. Depending on the outcome there, they can then be appealed to the state Superior Court.
The first hearing in that appeal before the Zoning Board was scheduled for 7 p.m. November 20, but earlier today, the attorney for the developer sent a letter withdrawing their appeal. That means that this application is over, that the Planning Commission’s decision to deny will stand.
Thank you to the Planning Commission for all their hard work and for crafting such an excellent decision. Now that we have all this focus on Cross Mills, lets think about not just what we don’t want, but also what we do want for our town.

What a relief! I have read so many stories about how tenacious DG is in expanding their footprint, that I thought years of litigation was in Charlestown’s future. Thanks to all who worked to discourage the retail giant from crushing local business, because that is what some of the town’s retailers were faced with. Ruth Platner did a fantastic job along with her colleagues on the Planning Commission. For those who actually filed petitions against the DG, we thank you. On this Thanksgiving Day, let’s thank all who worked so hard and made their voices heard, so that DG finally got the message.

Hello all, we need to continue to stay vigilant about this distressing application and other potential development issues that will lessen our town’s wonderful rural character.
Having Ruth Platner on the Planning Commission to continue the fight, whatever it may be, is our best protection.

I am thrilled to hear this. Once again I am grateful for our champion Ruth Platner and the commission for being so steadfast in protecting our rural town. She’s always on top of the issues and must spend unimaginable time on them. Her extreme efforts have saved us so many times. THANK YOU!!
