Charlestown Town Council Appreciation of George Tremblay

At the November Town Council meeting, Charlestown Town Councilors Virginia Lee, Julie Carroccia, Bonnie Van Slyke, and Denise Rhodes read the following tribute to outgoing Town Council member George Tremblay who did not seek reelection and is retiring from the Town Council.

We, the members of the Charlestown Town Council, this 13th day of November 2018 wish to acknowledge George Tremblay for his significant public service for the health and welfare of all the citizens of the Town of Charlestown.

George Tremblay

Thank you, George, for being willing to step into an unexpected vacancy to make a complete five member Town Council so that we could effectively govern the Town of Charlestown for 2018. As the voter’s choice and Vice President of the prior Town Council, you had the unique ability to have the confidence of the citizens of the Town and to fully participate immediately with the work of the Town Council in a seamless transition. Your wisdom, humor, articulate communication and thoughtfulness were a valuable contribution to our deliberations and decisions.

Thank you as well for your earlier service to the townspeople of Charlestown – on the Town Council, 2012-2016 and the Planning Commission, 2010-2012. Among your many contributions, thank you for: your dedication to challenging any initiative that threatens to undermine local control over planning, zoning, and land use, your exploring a ban on single-use plastic bags that eventually led to promotion of reusable tote bags as an alternative, your in-depth analysis of the RI Low and Moderate Income Housing Act and your advocacy for correcting defects in the Act as it relates to small, rural towns, such as Charlestown, your role in rescuing the Charlestown Village project for seniors (ChurchWoods) when the state was neglecting it.

We wish you and your family health and happiness in the years ahead. – Thank you!

State Senator Elaine Morgan presented a Senate proclamation celebrating George’s public service and State Representative Blake Filippi presented a resolution from the Rhode Island House of Representatives. Blake also commended George for his generous donation of the development rights to much of his property in the watershed of Pasquisett Pond to The Nature Conservancy. You can read about George and Sue Tremblay’s land donation in the December 2016 issue of the Nature Conservancy Magazine.
