All Day Budget Referendum
Monday, June 1, 8am to 8pm
Charlestown Town Hall

Please Vote “YES” On Question 1 : “Shall the Town of Charlestown finance the acquisition, preservation or protection of open space or any interest therin alone or in conjunction with federal agencies, state agencies, land conservancies, land trusts or preservation organizations for preservation and approve the issuance of bonds ...”

• Allow the town to get matching funds from State Environmental Management Bonds, US Fish and Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy, and Champlin Foundation.

• Protect wildlife habitat, ground and surface water, farms, and scenic views

• Expand opportunities for public access and passive recreation

• Offset the cost of residential development, enhance property values, and attract tourists

Local matching funds are needed to protect all of this for future generations. Read more about it in the posts below.

"YES" on Question 1 could Protect the Pawcatuck's Wild and Scenic Status

The Pawcatuck River forms the Northern border of Charlestown. The United States Congress has nominated this river that forms a beautiful frame around our town for Federal designation as a Wild and Scenic River. All of the remaining land along the river may eventually be developed, but we believe there is still time to save some of it. DEM and the Nature Conservancy have made preservation of land along the Pawcatuck a priority, but their investment usually requires matching funds, funds that might be available if voters approve Question 1 at the June 1st referendum.

Question 1 Will Protect Agriculture and Our Rural Character

The November 2014 election ballot included a state question that provided money to protect Rhode Island’s working farms. The question passed by 70% in Charlestown, but without local matching funds, none of this money will be spent in Charlestown.
