Brad Sherman Of Charlestown Wins 1st Place In National Wildlife Refuges Photo Contest

The Friends of the National Wildlife Refuges of Rhode Island have announced the winners of their 25th annual amateur photo competition.

Contestants were asked to submit photos taken on one of the five National Wildlife Refuges in Rhode Island. The Refuges are Ninigret NWR in Charlestown, Trustom Pond NWR in South Kingstown, John H. Chafee NWR at Pettaquamscutt Cove in South Kingstown and Narragansett, Sachuest Point NWR in Middletown and Block Island NWR.

The “Best of Show” has been awarded to “Looking for Love” taken by Janice Sullivan of Middletown, RI at Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge.

The winners in the four different categories are:

Flora

  • 1st place: “Bee Balm” by Brad Sherman of Charlestown, RI taken at Trustom Pond NWR
  • 2nd place: “Lace in the Last Light” by Alison Lohrum of Newport, RI taken at Sachuest Point NWR
  • 3rd place: “White Beauty” by Carmen Rugel of Middletown, RI taken at Trustom Pond NWR

Wildlife:

  • 1st place: “Cautious Curiosity” by Skylar Dunn of Pawtucket, RI taken at Sachuest Point NWR
  • 2nd place: “Egret Ballet” by Emery Thomas of West Hartford, CT taken at Block Island NWR
  • 3rd place: “Miniature Beauty” by Marjorie Vorhaben of Wakefield, RI taken at Trustom Pond NWR

Wildlife Habitat/Landscape

  • 1st place: “Have a Seat” by Joan DeFinis of Middletown, RI taken at Block Island NWR
  • 2nd place: “Sea Foam” by Frank Lotito of Middletown, RI taken at Sachuest Point NWR
  • 3rd place: “Best Sunset View” by Carmen Rugel of Middletown, RI taken at Sachuest Point NWR

Children under Age 14 – Any Subject on a Refuge

  • 1st place: “Memories of a Butterfly” by Mairead Colleran of So. Deerfield, MA taken at Trustom Pond NWR
  • 2nd place: “Frail Green” by Andrei Picu of Wynantskill, NY taken at John Chafee NWR
  • 3rd place: “Munch” by Mairead Colleran of So. Deerfield, MA taken at Trustom Pond NWR

All the entered photos will be on exhibit at Kettle Pond Visitors Center in Charlestown until September 26 and then exhibited at Sachuest Point Visitors Center until October 14.

The Friends of the National Wildlife Refuges of Rhode Island is a volunteer member-based nonprofit organization devoted to conservation and development of healthy habitat for flora and fauna at Rhode Island’s National Wildlife Refuges, and to safe, accessible, ecological experiences for refuge visitors. The Friends group helps secure funds for and works on refuge projects designed to meet the goals of the US Fish and Wildlife Comprehensive Plan for Rhode Island’s 1800 acres of federal refuge habitats.
