Winter Is A Great Time To Explore Charlestown’s Open Space
There are great health benefits, for body and soul, when connecting with nature, and winter is one of the most beautiful times to hike in Charlestown.
We are so lucky to live in Charlestown, where we have access to the Pawcatuck River, ponds, parks and public open space located throughout our town. Taking a hike can provide solitude and plenty of distance! Even our ocean beaches can provide space, if you’re able to walk a bit. A long walk east of Blue Shutters Beach, in the Ninigret Conservation Area, will bring you to quiet stretches of beach where it’s just you and the shore birds.
Even when the weather is relatively mild, you still need to dress warmly for winter hiking and check the weather forecast before you head out. To be safe, you should also wear hunter orange, even if the preserve you are hiking does not allow hunting. If you are hiking on state land, you are required to wear orange from September through May. Check our post on hunting seasons for dates when you need to wear orange and how much orange is required.
