Cliff Vanover: CCA’s only “Special Interest” is Charlestown
The following letter was submitted to local newspapers and is reprinted here with permission of the author Cliff Vanover. Mr. Vanover is a member of the Charlestown Citizens Alliance Steering Committee.
Recent comments at political party websites this election season have described the Charlestown Citizens Alliance as a special interest organization and stated that this is somehow a despicable thing. The commentators don’t define what the alliance’s interests are except to say that they are against them.
The only “interest” that the alliance has is to protect Charlestown’s natural resources and low tax rate, to promote honest and transparent government, and to prevent unregulated development. Charlestown is indeed a very special place and it deserves our special interest.
Charlestown Town Council candidates Sarah Fletcher, Angela Jalbert, Peter Keating, Ruth Platner, and Bonnie Van Slyke; Planning Commission candidates Carol Mossa, Lisa Marie St. Godard, Sarah St. Laurent, and Coleen Galvin Yaroshenko; and Town Moderator candidate David Wilkinson share this same interest in Charlestown.
Any voter who has a “special” interest in the protection of our beautiful town should mark their November 5 ballots with these names.

I wish I could vote for all who are in favor of protecting Charlestown’s resources and natural environment. But alas I am only a long time Summer resident who loves Charlestown just the way it is.

It would seem then that candidates who oppose the objectives of the CCA are against protecting our resources, have no interest in honest and open government, and favor unregulated development. I’ll be voting for those residents who embrace the ideals of the CCA.
