Walk Off The Big Meal And Explore Charlestown’s Open Space
There are great health benefits, for body and soul, when connecting with nature, and autumn is one of the most beautiful times to hike in Charlestown. And after a big Thanksgiving meal you may be looking for fun ways to burn off some calories.
We are so lucky to live in Charlestown, where we have access to the Pawcatuck River, ponds, parks and public open space located throughout our town. Taking a hike can provide solitude and plenty of distance! Even our ocean beaches can provide space, if you’re able to walk a bit. A long walk east of Blue Shutters Beach, in the Ninigret Conservation Area, will bring you to quiet stretches of beach where it’s just you and the shore birds.
Be Safe! Be sure to wear at least 200 square inches of florescent orange (usually a hat and or a vest) when hiking on state, federal, or other public and private open space. During the shotgun deer season in December, five hundred (500) square inches are required to be worn by all users of state parks. We had a post on wearing florescent orange in September.
Below are ideas for places in Charlestown to explore and walk off the big meal.

Thanks to CCA for this email. Could you and the town Parks and Rec dept work to produce some appropriate literature (leaflets, town web site etc) using these or like pictures and the map. These could be given to summer visitors who come for the beaches so that they could be attracted to come again in spring and/or fall, and maybe even winter. In fact a leaflet for each season could work. Include other recreational activities like hunting, fishing, canoe/kayaking, bird migration watching. All are outdoor activities that are “covid minimal”
Maybe the economic development commission could use these for marketing shoulder-season visits to Charlestown for the accommodation, restaurant, rec equipment rental businesses in town.

Great suggestion. A walk in the woods also reduces other stresses on the mind and the body. Such a walk is a natural sedative. We have a lot to be thankful for.
