Brad Sherman Of Charlestown Wins 1st And 3rd Place In National Wildlife Refuges Photo Contest

The Friends of the National Wildlife Refuges of Rhode Island have announced the winners of their 21st annual amateur photo competition.

Contestants were asked to submit photos taken on one of the five National Wildlife Refuges in Rhode Island. The Refuges are Ninigret NWR in Charlestown, Trustom Pond NWR in South Kingstown, John H. Chafee NWR at Pettaquamscutt Cove in South Kingstown and Narragansett, Sachuest Point NWR in Middletown and Block Island NWR.

The “Best of Show” has been awarded to “Nesting Warbler” taken by Noah Brownsey of Niskayuna, NY taken at Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge

The winners in the four different categories are:

Wildlife:

  • 1st place: “Monarch on Thistle” by Bob Arnold of Coventry, RI taken at Sachuest Point NWR
  • 2nd place: “Who’s There” by Steven Wood of Wakefield, RI taken at Trustom Pond NWR
  • 3rd place: “Big Billy the Bullfrog” by Stacy Tynan of Waterford, CT taken at Trustom Pond NWR

Flora

  • 1st place: “Bee and Thistle” by Brad Sherman of Charlestown, RI taken at Trustom Pond NWR
  • 2nd place: “Milkweed” by Greg Cummings of Fanwood, NJ taken at Trustom Pond NWR
  • 3rd place: “Sunny Day” by Pam Marsden of Bristol, RI taken at Sachuest Point NWR

Wildlife Habitat/Landscape

  • 1st place: “Late Summer Day at Sachuest” by Bob Arnold of Coventry, RI taken at Sachuest Point NWR
  • 2nd place: “Morning Web” by Greg Cummings of Fanwood, NJ taken at Trustom Pond NWR
  • 3rd place: “Farm Pond Calm” by Brad Sherman of Charlestown, RI taken at Trustom Pond NWR

Children under Age 14 – Any Subject on a Refuge

  • 1st place: “Sandy Path” by Lily Lawhorne of Richmond, RI taken at Block Island NWR
  • 2nd place: “Purple Rose” by Lily Lawhorne of Richmond, RI taken at Block Island NWR

People’s Choice Award

  • “Barred Owl” by Bob Arnold of Coventry, RI taken at Sachuest Point NWR

The Friends of the National Wildlife Refuges of Rhode Island is a volunteer member-based nonprofit organization devoted to conservation and development of healthy habitat for flora and fauna at Rhode Island’s National Wildlife Refuges, and to safe, accessible, ecological experiences for refuge visitors. The Friends group helps secure funds for and works on refuge projects designed to meet the goals of the US Fish and Wildlife Comprehensive Plan for Rhode Island’s 1800 acres of federal refuge habitats.
