In Memoriam: Constance D. Vadnais-Baker
It is with heavy hearts that we must report the passing of Connie Baker. Connie was elected to the Charlestown Planning Commission in 2012 and 2014 where she brought her deep love of our special and unique part of Rhode Island to all of her decision making.
Connie made many other contributions to our community, she was the Co-Chairman of the Charlestown Affordable Housing Commission, member of the Board of Directors of the Charlestown Land Trust and also a member of the Charlestown Land Trust Farmers Market Committee as well as their Membership Committee and Auction Committee. Connie was a strong advocate for Charlestown’s farms and the protection of land for open space.
Charlestown is a greener place because of Connie. We owe her our deepest gratitude. And to her family we offer our sincerest condolences.
You can read Connie’s obituary at the Avery-Storti Funeral Home website.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am Thursday at the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, Wakefield. Due to social/physical distancing restrictions, the service will be live streamed on the Avery-Storti Funeral Home facebook page, allowing those who cannot attend to be included. Burial will follow in River Bend Cemetery, Westerly.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Charlestown Land Trust, P.O. Box 1387, Charlestown, RI 02813 or South County Hospital, 100 Kenyon Avenue, Wakefield, RI 02879.

Connie made everything fun. We worked outside the polls together on election day, the first time Connie was elected to Planning Commission, and we spent most of the day laughing. In nearly every task and situation she was like that – she brought fun. I will miss her smile and wit, but I especially mourn Charlestown’s loss of someone who cared so deeply about the town’s environment and worked hard to protect it.

I miss her still. I was just thinking about Connie yesterday and how little recognition those who actually achieve environmental protection get.

Connie was a welcoming presence at the Farmer’s Market, Charlestown Land Trust gatherings and anywhere we met. We will miss her smile and friendly nature. Connie was always willing to lend a hand volunteering on the Affordable Housing Commission, Farmer’s Market, Planning Commission, Land Trust for the betterment of Charlestown.

Connie was one of the good people I met on life’s journey. I’m happy that I could share the path with her even for a short time.

Connie worked steadily toward integrating Charlestown’s natural rural heritage with promotion of the availability of affordable housing in the town. Her dedication to a healthy political and social climate in Charlestown will be sorely missed.
