Self-storage Developer Withdraws Application
Bonnie Van Slyke, the author of this post, is a member of the Charlestown Town Council and also serves as the Town Council Liaison to the Planning Commission.
The continuation of the public informational meeting on the Master Plan application of Storage Place LLC to build a self-storage facility on property on the pond side of Rt. 1 between the Hitching Post and the Willows Annex (Lot 77, Map 5, and a portion of Lot 81, Map 5) was on the Planning Commission’s agenda for July 24. However, at the beginning of the meeting, Attorney Steven Surdut, who represents the applicant, informed the Commission that his client was withdrawing its application. The Planning Commission, after determining that Attorney Surdut’s representation on the record was sufficient, voted to accept the withdrawal. Attorney Surdut indicated that his client would be applying in the future to construct a self-storage facility “in a more appropriate location.” It is unclear if the developer intends to apply again at a different location in Charlestown or in another town.

Thanks to the Planning Commission for maintaining the Comprehensive Plan. Our low-key town officials are working hard to keep Charlestown free from those who don’t care about the town plan. Dollar General was another example of how our officials protect the residents from outrageous outside incursions. Thanks for watching our backs.
