Council Votes To Authorize Solicitor And Others To Take Action On Radio Tower
On Monday, April 9, the Town Council voted to authorize the Town Solicitor and other Town officials to take action to ensure the public health and safety of residents in relation to the 178-foot radio tower proposed for the DOT Salt Barn at the Cross Mills exit on Rt. 1. One of those actions will be to enforce the Town’s Zoning Ordinance.
Charlestown’s Building and Zoning Official, Joseph Warner, wrote to the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency on April 3 informing them that the proposal must comply with local land-use regulations and zoning ordinance. You can read the full text of his two page letter below.

Congratulations to the Town Council for again being on top of this. For the third time in under 2 years agencies outside of Charlestown attempt to impinge on the quality of life we so value for some ill conceived plan. First, there was the Railroad By-Pass (FRA), then Invenergy, now a 178 foot (!) radio tower courtesy of R.I Emergency Management Agency. How much time of our volunteer leaders and town employees do the paid functionaries of these entities intend to use up? Apparently there is no limit.
Thankfully our Town Council is proactive, energetic and highly competent. We are fortunate to have these Councilors looking out for our citizens and the quality of life in Charlestown.
