Town to Consider Small Open Space Purchase
A six acre parcel of wooded land on the south side of the Town Hall property has been offered to the Town for $75 thousand.
The access to Puchalski Field, the recreation field behind Town Hall, already uses part of this 6 acre lot for its roadway. Acquisition of the lot would put this roadway under town control. The parcel is about 100 feet wide and fully wooded. According to the Planning Commission advisory, the new parcel would help to provide an audio and visual buffer between a residential lot owned by the Narragansett Indian Tribe to the south and the athletic field. You can read the full advisory.

Is that considered tribal land? I thought that was what the previous house said on the sign? Just wondering who is selling it.

As I have pointed out in several futile attempts at correction, it’s not 6 acres, but more like 3. Do the math: 100 ft of frontage (width) by about 1400 ft in depth in a rectangular parcel yields 140,00o sq ft. At 43,560 sq ft /acre, that’s about 3.2 acres. Given that access to the ball field behind town hall already trespasses on that parcel, the town should buy it, but it should pay for about 3.2 acres, not 6.

You are correct George! The 6+ acres matches the lot as it appears on the zoning map, but that is not drawn correctly. When you use the area tool on the town GIS map it gives you 6.75 acres, but the math gives you closer to 3. Although it does label the frontage (width) at 100 feet on the zoning map, it is drawn at nearly 200 feet and that is probably where the 6 acres comes from.
