Tucker Woods Preserve
Owned by the Town of Charlestown since 2021, this 66.5-acre property was purchased with a Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management open space grant and Town Open Space Bond funds. The DEM holds a conservation easement on the land in perpetuity.
The mostly forested land lies along Alton Carolina Road (Rt. 91) and serves to fill a conservation gap between The Nature Conservancy’s Francis Carter Preserve and the State’s Carolina Wildlife Management Area. The property contains vernal pools, permanent and intermittent streams, and other wetlands. Streams on Tucker Woods Preserve connect Ice House Pond on the Carter Preserve to the Pawcatuck River. Much of the property is inside a state-mapped wildlife corridor.
There is a parking lot off of Alton Carolina Road. Trails have been developed that lead through the forest and to a stream. The land includes hills which provide long range views of the countryside. Trails leading to these hilltops and views will be developed in the future.
