Great Swamp Wildlife Management Area
Fifty five acres of the State Great Swamp Wildlife Management Area lies in Charlestown. The rest of the 3000+ acre property lies in South Kingstown. The land is managed for both wildlife protection and hunting.
You can hike from Biscuit City Road to the river along the power line easement. Osprey nests are built on some of the pole tops, but many have been taken over by owls.
There was a bridge over the river at one time that connected Charlestown to the larger Management Area. If that were replaced by DEM, it would provide access for Charlestown people to the trails, wetlands, forest, and meadows of the Great Swamp Management Area and Wordens Pond.
The Great Swamp is designated a National Natural Landmark. The National Natural Landmarks Program recognizes and encourages the conservation of sites that contain outstanding biological and geological resources. More information about the National Natural Landmarks program is available at the National Park Service web site.
