Witness one of nature’s truly fascinating rituals as countless cinder worms wiggle their way to the surface to preserve their future existence. Quietly wade the coves of Ninigret Pond and listen to the sound of silence as it is interrupted by dozens of surface feeding stripers. Finally, fish this event using the cinder worm flies you tied yourself. Sounds far off? Not really!
The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in partnership with RI Department of Environmental Management, is hosting the Cinder Worm Workshop, now in its thirteenth year. There will be two weekday evening classes in fly tying instruction and one weekend evening of fly fishing, all free and without charge to registrants. The course syllabus is a treasure chest of comprehensive knowledge and instructional excellence. They would like to have everyone attend all sessions if possible, but there are options available to suit your individual needs.
Practical rigging and fly casting instruction will be available for any novice the day of fishing. Students will then fish the coves and shore line of Grassy Point area at the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge. “We can’t guarantee the weather or the fish,” said Dave Pollack, one of the principal organizers, “but past experiences have shown that this is prime time for worm sightings.” The program is open to any adult or accompanied child over the age of 10, regardless of skill level–40 maximum. Instruction and guidance will be provided by some of the area’s most proficient and knowledgeable worm fishermen, and led by Capt. Ray Stachelek and Dave Pollack, USFWS Volunteers. There will also be an opportunity for kayak fishing too – limited to experienced kayakers who have their own kayaks, equipped with required safety equipment and lighting for after dark.
There is no charge for this program. All fly tying materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own tools and equipment, but all necessary fly tying tools and equipment will be loaned to registrants upon request. Salt water fly fishing equipment, including rods, reel, lines and leaders, will be loaned to registrants who do not have their own tackle. There will also be a limited number of chest waders available.
