Angela Jalbert

Angie’s journey to Charlestown began 40 years ago when she was introduced to the town by her parents who lived in Tockwotten. Angie built a home here about 25 years ago and moved from Connecticut to live here full time 15 years ago.

Angie absolutely loves Charlestown. She moved here because she wanted to be a part of this wonderful village-like town and close to family. Her children grew up spending lazy, summer weekends and vacations with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins here in Charlestown. They were always wanting to go to the sweet Cross’ Mills Library for a book or movie and to Ninigret Park to swim in the pond and play with summer friends at camp.

From its pristine beaches and ponds, starry skies, and abundant wildlife to the beautiful woods, wildlife refuges, and open spaces, Angie says she cannot get enough of the beauty and peacefulness in the nature that abounds all around her. She feels incredibly lucky to be living in such a rare and special place, and she is committed to doing all she can to preserve and protect what we have here in Charlestown, for her family and the entire community.

Throughout her life and professional career, Angie has believed strongly in the importance of community connections. She states, “It is critical to be connected to the community to create and improve greater understanding of issues and concerns. This is important in order to respond in a caring and understanding way to help meet the needs of the community for the long-term and for the greater good.”

Angela J. Jalbert – Town Council

Drawn to the rural, tranquil, close-knit nature of Charlestown, Angie is passionate about preserving the community’s unique character and community connections.

A life-long educator, Angie has demonstrated over and again that she is skilled and creative. At a time when personalized learning was still an emerging concept, Angie provided individualized programming to her students who struggled in large group settings.

When working for Unified School District #1 (USD#1), Connecticut Department of Correction, she introduced a pioneering reading program from Canada called BLADE (Beginning Literacy for Adult Development in Education) that significantly helped struggling students. This reading program was adopted District-wide and used for many years.

At Connecticut’s Unified School District #1, Angie created the “Steer Straight Program,” where inmates visited public schools and shared their life experiences with students, emphasizing the consequences of their decisions. After educators throughout the state received several requests and letters from students and administrators, Steer Straight was incorporated into a number of schools in Connecticut, such as New Britain High School, and became part of an ongoing intervention program aimed at reaching students in need of this important behavioral health message. Because of the great need and positive impact on students, Steer Straight received federal funding as a “Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Program,” which is aimed at reducing drug, alcohol, and tobacco use, as well as violence, through education and prevention initiatives.

Angie was recognized several times as Manager of the Year by USD#1. She also served as President of the Connecticut Adult Association of Continuing Education for many years.

Angie will bring to the Town Council extensive experience in collaboration with state and community organizations and in strategic planning, technology integration, policy, grant management and reporting, and personnel development to her role in Charlestown’s government.
