Sarah St. Laurent

The Federal Railroad Administration’s plan to build new tracks in Charlestown threatened to cut Sarah’s neighborhood in half. She cheered as organizations like the Charlestown Land Trust and our town officials rose up against it, pointing to policies that support the preservation and protection of open space. Sarah was moved by the way her neighbors and fellow citizens rallied together, and their hard work and resilience inspired her to participate in the fight. Then, when the water contract with Invenergy threatened our groundwater supply, the community stepped up once again. “As a member of the Planning Commission for the past six years, I have been honored to work to protect our town and all of its great resources and to strive to protect its character for all of the citizens of Charlestown.”

Sarah E. St. Laurent – Planning Commission

Sarah spent part of her childhood in Rhode Island, later studying in Newport, but her years of work and raising a family were spent in Connecticut. Rhode Island was a place for vacations—a place where she would ride her bike, hike and enjoy the natural beauty of its rivers, beaches and forests. Life’s circumstances always kept pulling her back to Rhode Island, and 15 years ago she and her husband purchased the perfect home in Charlestown. She is now very happy to call Charlestown her permanent home, becoming a full-time resident when she retired 11 years ago from her career in nursing. Sarah has felt a deep connection to our community from the beginning of her time here, but the recent threat to neighborhoods, wildlife, and protected open space by the Federal Railroad Administration plan for new train tracks through northern Charlestown, and Invenergy’s plan to withdraw water from our aquifer and truck it out of town have inspired her to become actively involved. Sarah believes in preserving our environment and protecting our farmlands, forests, wetlands, beaches, rivers and ponds, as well as the cultural heritage of our historic villages, and in encouraging and supporting local Rhode Island businesses.
