SUMMARY:Community Roadside Litter Pick-Up Day
DESCRIPTION:Who: You and your family and friends\nWhere: Pick any road you like in Charlestown to pick up roadside litter\nWhat: The town is providing the bags and the transfer station and fire stations will accept them without charge on April 20 from 8 AM to 4 PM \nThere is a small group of people in our community\, or those driving through Charlestown\, who throw their drink and food containers out of their car windows. The result is an accumulation of litter along the roadsides. \nThere are many of you who already pickup roadside litter as you take an afternoon walk or you may continuously clean the litter tossed in front of your property. Litter Pick-up Day is a chance to get more people involved and raise awareness about this issue by offering free trash bags and free disposal for those who volunteer. \nTell your friends or organize a neighborhood pickup effort. Seeing people out picking up litter on April 20 might send a message to those who create the litter in the first place. \nYou can of course pick up litter at any time! April 20 will be an amnesty day for your blue bags of roadside litter at the transfer station. \nA special thank you to Charlestown resident Warren Schwartz for bringing this great idea to the Town’s attention over seven years ago and for all his help throughout the years helping to organize the event.\n \nDetails on where to get the bags and more are below. \n\nBlue bags can be picked up until April 19 at Town Hall\, Quonnie Farms\, and at Compass Hardware.\n\n\n\n\n\nTown Hall: hours are Monday to Friday\, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Bags will be at the Town Clerk’s office.\nCompass Hardware: 8 Ridgewood Road. Hours: Monday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday 8 a.m. to Noon.\nQuonnie Farms : 16 West Beach Road. Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWear bright colored clothing\, such as blaze orange.\nWear work gloves to protect hands from potentially harmful items.\nPlease do not clean up or walk on Rt. 1 or any road you feel is unsafe.\nPlease drop off your bags on April 20 at the transfer station (50 Sand Hill Rd.) or at either of the three fire stations (4377 South Country Trail\, 4258 Old Post Road\, or 5664 Post Road).\n\nIf dropping off at a fire station\, please leave bags in rear of station\, near dumpster and please do not block the gate of the dumpster area.\nIf dropping off at transfer station\, please leave bags in designated areas.\n\n\n\nVisit Our “Trash Talk” Page For More On The Litter Issue

SUMMARY:Deerfoot 5K Run
DESCRIPTION:What: A 5k to commemorate Deerfoot (Tarzan Brown)\nCost:  $25 – Link for registration form \nHeld annually in Ninigret Park\, the Deerfoot 5K commemorates the accomplishments of Charlestown’s Ellison Myers Brown Sr. (September 22\, 1914¬August 23\, 1975)\, who was widely known as Tarzan Brown and as Deerfoot among his people of the Narragansett Indian Tribe. \nBrown was a two-time winner of the Boston Marathon\, in 1936 (2:33:40) and 1939 (2:28:51). A direct descendant of the last acknowledged royal family of the Narragansett Indian Tribe of Rhode Island\, he also participated in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Brown was scheduled to be in the 1940 Summer Olympics in Helsinki\, Finland\, but they were cancelled due to WWII. \nStories about Brown often appear in the Boston media at race time. One is that\, in 1935\, he ran the last miles of the race barefoot\, having discarded his tattered sneakers approximately 20 miles into the race. Another is that\, in 1936\, the defending champion overtook Brown on what is known as Heartbreak Hill\, reportedly giving Brown a pat on the shoulder; Brown rallied and won the race. Another is that\, in 1938\, along the way to the finish in Boston\, Brown jumped into Lake Cochituate in Natick to cool off. \nBrown is one of two Native Americans to have won the Boston Marathon. Brown also set the American men’s record for a marathon at the 1939 Boston Marathon (2:28:51) and at a 1940 marathon in Salisbury Beach\, Massachusetts (2:27:30).
