Supermoon 2014 at Frosty Drew
August 10, 2014 @ 8:30 pm - 11:55 pm
Frosty Drew Observatory is opening tonight to celebrate the return of the supermoon. A supermoon happens when the full lunar phase occurs withing 24 hours of the Moon’s closest point in its orbit around Earth (called perigee). This afternoon, the Moon will reach the closest perigee of the year at 1:44 p.m. followed closely by the full lunar phase occurring at 2:09 p.m. With clear skies and comfortable temperatures in the forecast, lunar craziness will surely take place. Starting at 8:30 p.m., the Observatory will be open with bright views of the supermoon, with a smaller telescope setup in the court yard offering wide field views of the Moon. We plan to stay open until near midnight taking in the light.
If that bright Moon is keeping you up tonight, just go with it. Grab a lawn chair and head over to Frosty Drew and sit with us in the bounteous moonlight of the supermoon.
