National Wildlife Refuge Week – Camping with a Kayak
October 17, 2014 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
In July, presenter David Smith completed an 8-day, 101-mile journey from the border of Massachusetts to Barn Island in Stonington, Conn., with three canoers. The four men were the first to make the crossing of Rhode Island, paddling a variety of rivers and portaging nearly 20 miles. Learn what gear makes such a journey possible and how to pack all the gear you will need, including food and water, into confined spaces. Get some advice on what gear to leave at home and what is essential. He will also discuss food options and review a variety of gear, including stoves, pots, sleeping pads and tents. Smith has paddled the waters of southern Rhode Island for the past 48 years. His tips would be applicable to any outdoor adventure whether it is in a kayak, canoe or on a backpacking trip.
