International Coastal Cleanup
September 20, 2014 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
The International Coastal Cleanup is a global event in which volunteers all over the world remove trash from the shores and document what they find. The data is compiled and published in an annual report on marine debris by the Ocean Conservancy. Policymakers use the information to raise awareness about marine debris and reduce the problem at the source.
Save The Bay, the Rhode Island State Coordinator, invites you to participate! On average, more than 2,000 volunteers participate annually in the Rhode Island ICC at more than 80 sites, typically removing about 20,000 pounds of trash and debris.
In Charlestown, a group led by Save the Bay’s South Coast Keeper, Dave Prescott, will clean up the Charlestown Breachway from 9 a.m. to noon. Meet at the Charlestown Breachway parking lot, 812 Charlestown Beach Road.
Another group, led by Jim McMonigle, will clean up the Charlestown Town Beach, from 9 a.m. to noon. Meet at the town beach parking lot, 557 Charlestown Beach Road.
Bags and disposable gloves will be provided at the cleanups. Volunteers should bring a reusable bottle of water, work gloves and wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes.
This is a rain or shine event and will only be canceled if there are thunderstorms or other extreme weather.
For more information, or if you are interested in leading a cleanup, contact Volunteer Manager July Lewis. If your business is interested in sponsoring the event, please contact Events Manager Leanne Danielsen.
