What was it like growing up on a farm in Quonnie? Come and hear Dick Hutchins at the Quonochontaug Grange on Route 1. This presentation is sponsored by the Quonochontaug Historical Society.
Dick Hutchins grew up on one of the last working farms in Quonochontaug. In 1937 Dick’s parents started managing the farm for 15 years at the head of West Beach Road. The farm was owned by Dr.Swanson a New York City dentist. The Hutchins had a dairy and beef herd and pigs and supplied meat including pork, beef and milk to the area including eggs as well as fruits and vegetables grown on this self-sufficient farm. The Farm House was moved from the north side to the south side of Route 1 including the clothes line and all! This took place when the road was expanded in 1941 and paved to serve the Ninigret Naval Air Station and Army outpost at Burlingame State Park.
Pictures of the farm and its workings will be shown including a social time including refreshments following Dick’s presentation.
All are welcome!!!!
