George Tremblay

The Low and Moderate Income Housing (LMIH) Act provides one example of loss of local control to a statewide initiative. The Act allows creation of building lots where local zoning would forbid it. George’s in-depth analysis of performance of the Act in four rural towns was widely disseminated, and has served as a talking point with community leaders from Barrington to Block Island. A legislative oversight commission has since been constituted to correct defects in the Act. Tom Gentz, President of the Charlestown Town Council, has a seat at that table. George has supported Tom’s leadership role in rescuing the Charlestown Village LMIH project for seniors (ChurchWoods) from the fumbling hands of the RI Housing Authority. George has authored many letters to local newspapers to explain RI’s affordable housing law, and the hazards it presents to rural communities.

As the breadth of George’s career writings indicates, biochemistry engages all areas of the life sciences, from aquaculture and botany to pharmacology and medical practice. As a biochemist, George has a broad knowledge of other scientific disciplines, which has helped to inform work done by the Planning Commission and the Town Council.

George C. Tremblay – Town Council

After a successful career as a Professor of Biochemistry, training graduate students and conducting scientific research, George retired from URI to the forest management of his land and the operation of a portable sawmill business. George has lived in Charlestown for 31 years and is a current member of the Town Council and past member of the Planning Commission. George \”sees the rural lifestyle that Charlestown offers just off the beach as a unique treasure inherited from the hard work and steady vigilance of past community leaders.\” As his record over the past four years shows, he is committed to challenging any initiative that threatens to undermine local control over planning, zoning, and development in ways that negatively impact the character of our community.
