2010 Election

The 2010 Election

As the election gets closer, CCA will be greatly expanding the web pages devoted to the election. CCA is committed to an election outcome that produces public officials who will work in the interest of the majority of Charlestown's citizens, not just a special few as we have seen in this last administration.

Check back to this page often to see how our coverage of the election expands as the weeks progress.

The CCA Election Platform

Good government requires an INFORMED electorate. To that end, Charlestown Citizens Alliance will be endorsing and supporting qualified elected officers who endorse our group’s five major issues—responsive, open government; preserving the natural environment; responsible development, anti-casino gambling and fiscal responsibility. Our platform is based on the surveys we have done of residents over three years in which the five issues were identified.

The five most important issues as identified in the CCA surveys of residents:

Responsive, open government

  • Town business conducted with civility and respect for citizens and volunteers, and in compliance with state Open Meetings laws and the Town Charter

Preserving our natural environment

  • Recognition of Charlestown's responsibility and role as steward of our natural resources, for our current and future health, safety and quality of life

Responsible Development

  • Managed growth of business and residential development in keeping with the character of Charlestown and the town’s Comprehensive Plan

Complete Opposition to the expansion of gambling in Charlestown

  • Casino/gaming would result in negative impacts on Qualify of Life, adversely effect property values, create economic hardship and cause huge infrastructure costs that must be paid by taxpayers
  • An opposition to any expansion of gambling  in Charlestown, especially efforts that lack the support of local and statewide voters

Fiscal Responsibility

  • Maintenance of the town’s high bond rating
  • Taxpayer support for efficient town services
  • Strive to maintain the third lowest tax rate in Rhode Island
  • Consider all possible public and private grant opportunities in keeping with the town’s Comprehensive Plan
  • Support strong school system consistent with the will of Charlestown taxpayer
