CHARLESTOWN’S LAND TRUST (South County Conservancy)

BONFIRE & OPEN SPACE CELEBRATION

When: Sunday, February 14th, 1 –4 p.m.

Where: Amos Green Farm, Charlestown, RI (RTE 112)

The original farm was established in 1750, and it is one of the town's oldest farms. His son, Amos Green, in addition to being a farmer, was also the head of the Charlestown militia. The acreage lies adjacent to the 800-acre Carter Preserve. This farm was protected through the generosity of the Town of Charlestown , Peter and Frances Fenner, Russell and Carla Ricci and others.

Directions: From U.S. Route 1, proceed North on Route 2 , take left onto Route 112 and take second driveway on the right immediately after the Carter Preserve (left hand side). Follow green and white South County Conservancy signs.

This is a great opportunity for open space advocates to enjoy the beauty of Charlestown.

Families Welcome. Free and open to the public, Weather permitting - no rain dates.

GreenHouse, a teen green initiative based at the Kettle Pond Visitor Center, is Opening 2010 with a microphone.

Kettle Pond Visitor Center opens its doors—and its podium—to young adults around Rhode Island.

In the dawn of the new year, teens all over the state are invited to come to Kettle Pond for an Open Mic Night hosted by GreenHouse, a group of students determined to stress the importance of sustainability through creative mediums.

If you have a statement to make, make it. In addition to poetry and live music, we encourage speeches, interpretive dance, film, and photography. Although an environmental theme is encouraged, everyone is an artist, and everyone deserves an outlet. The best case situation would have attendees choking on passion and ideas. Contact GreenHouse to sign up for a definite slot, otherwise there will be a sign-up at the door. Walk-ins are always welcome!

Not an artist? Come watch. Feedback is crucial, and audience members are welcome to respond to performances. This is also an opportunity to meet new people and get a feel for the talent teeming in R.I. Open Mic will be the night to chill in a casual, but intimate setting. Hot beverages and baked goods will be available.

GreenHouse’s goal as a relatively new group is to become familiar with those who may join the battle for environmental awareness, and what better weapon to fight with than creativity? Open Mic Night is intended to inspire teenagers, and to draw them to the Kettle Pond Visitor Center, a contemporary, valuable resource located right in Charlestown. A member of the teen green group says, “Maybe if we put our voices together, we will be loud enough to make a difference.”

For more information about Open Mic Night, contact Neil Anthes at 401 364-9124 or e-mail GreenHouse at greenhouseFWS@gmail.com.

----

During the day, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the GreenHouse Teen Group will be hosting a Granola Bar event, beverages and food, plus a craft using recycled materials. Suitable for all ages.

The Rhode Island Ocean Special Area Management Plan (SAMP) has established a listserv. To be added to the listserv, please contact oceansamp@gso.uri.edu.

The Ocean SAMP, led by the R.I. Coastal Resources Management Council, will define use zones for Rhode Island’s offshore waters through a research and planning process that integrates the best available science with open public input and involvement.

This listserv is intended to keep Rhode Islanders and other interested individuals informed of progress on the SAMP, which will be developed over the next two years. More information on the SAMP, including a map of the proposed project area, a calendar of events, and descriptions of the research projects that will serve as the scientific foundation for the zoning process, may be found at the Ocean SAMP web site: http://seagrant.gso.uri.edu/oceansamp.

We value your input and invite you to share your thoughts with us by emailing Monica Allard Cox at oceansamp@gso.uri.edu or calling (401) 874-6015. For CRMC regulatory questions, contact Laura Ricketson-Dwyer, CRMC public educator and information coordinator, at (401) 783-7886 or e-mail lricketson@crmc.ri.gov.
