Salt Ponds Coalition Needs Help With Groundwater Study

The University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography was recently awarded a grant to study how groundwater affects the amount of nutrients found in Rhode Island’s coastal waters, including in the salt ponds. They will be focusing their studies on Green Hill and Ninigret Ponds.

The first phase of this study requires field work which will include geophysical surveys of study sites, groundwater tracer surveys in the salt ponds, and the installation of monitoring wells on land. This is where the Salt Ponds Coalition needs your help!

URI is looking for property owners who are willing to volunteer their parcels for installation of sampling wells. These test wells have a small footprint and can be sited on the property in a low-use area and covered to look like a sprinkler head. Well locations will be kept private and data collected will not be directly associated with property addresses. URI is looking for a minimum of six (6) sites near Ninigret Pond and six (6) sites near Green Hill Pond to install sampling wells.
