Public Hearing on Citizen Proposal to Acquire the General Stanton Inn set for Monday, May 2
What: Town Budget Hearing
When: Monday, May 2 at 7 p.m.
Where: Charlestown Town Hall
A Public Hearing is scheduled for discussion of the 2017 Town Budget on Monday, May 2, at 7:00 PM in Council Chambers. Representatives of Town Government will be present to answer questions about the budget, to be put before voters at the June 6 Financial Referendum.
A citizen’s group has acquired a sufficient number of signatures of qualified voters to place an independent warrant item on the June 6 Financial Referendum. The added ballot item would authorize the Town to borrow $1.75 million to purchase the General Stanton Inn.
Representatives of the citizen’s group will be present to answer questions about their initiative. (see inserted post below for petition language) The group now has a website at www.friendsofthegeneralstantoninn.org.
Because the question has met the signature threshold, it is placed on the ballot automatically. The Town Council cannot remove or alter the question based on Public Hearing testimony. For this ballot question, the Public Hearing is an informational meeting, but it is still a good opportunity to pose questions that the petitioners may answer at the hearing or perhaps before the June 6 referendum.
