Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge Closure for Deer Hunting Opportunity for Youth

The Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge is hosting its third annual deer hunt opportunity for youth this December, from Saturday, December 5th until Monday, December 21st. During this time the Salt Pond Unit of the Refuge, including the parking lots, nature trails, and kayak launch, will be closed to non-hunters to ensure a safe and successful hunting opportunity for the participating youth.

The Ninigret NWR deer hunting opportunity for youth is a mentorship event and big game management tool that benefits both underserved youth in the hunting community as well as the refuge’s wildlife management goals. It is a lottery hunt where eight youth are randomly selected to receive a permit to hunt the refuge during the Rhode Island public land shotgun season. All youth hunters (12-17 years old) selected are required to attend a hunter safety orientation prior to participating in the refuge hunt.

Hunting on national wildlife refuges is a long standing tradition. It provides a cost effective tool for wildlife management and also one of the Service’s biggest supported public uses. For further information and questions on the hunting opportunities at the refuge, please contact Hunting Coordinator Neil Anthes at 401-364-9124, extension 43, or visit the website at Hunting permit information for the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex is available at
