Charlestown’s General Stanton Inn Flea Market named one of the best flea markets in America.
The Huffington Post, the Pulitzer Prize-winning national Internet newspaper, has named Charlestown’s General Stanton Inn Flea Market one of the best flea markets in America.
In a July 11 feature by Brie Dyas, titled, “The Only Guide You Need To The Best Flea Markets in America,” categorized by region, The General Stanton is singled out as the only flea market representing Rhode Island. It is just one of three named in New England and is the only one of those three that operates every weekend during the entire, 6-month, late April-mid-October, outdoor flea market season. The other two are Massachusetts’ Brimfield Antiques and Collectibles Show, held several times per year and Connecticut’s Harwington Antiques and Design Weekend (previously The Farmington Antiques Weekend), held once a year during the last weekend in August.
“Summer is the unofficial flea market season,” Dyas writes in her Huffington posting. “We’ve rounded up the more promising markets in the country…so you can start planning your weekends now.”
Dyas advises, “While there are many to choose from, there is, of course, a difference between the “good” flea markets and the more disappointing ones filled with tube socks.” Her article guides readers to 32 of those “good” flea markets across America, like The General Stanton Inn Flea Market.
Now in its 49th season, The General Stanton Inn is one of the oldest, largest and most popular flea markets in the area. It is set on seven, tree-shaded acres of the nationally landmarked General Stanton Inn. The Inn was established in1667, at the ancestral home of General Joseph Stanton, an American Patriot who distinguished himself as a Revolutionary War leader and as a U.S. Senator and Congressman.
On some summer Sundays, The General Stanton Inn Flea Market has been known to attract over 1500 visitors, many from throughout the country and world, who are vacationing at Charlestown’s world-class beaches. The General Stanton Inn Flea Market is especially prized for its nautical antiques and is a first-stop for many coastal Rhode Islanders decorating their cottages every summer. Students at several of the nearby colleges, set GPS for The General Stanton Inn Flea Market at the start of Fall and Spring semesters, to furnish their dorm rooms and apartments in up-cycled fashion.
Admission to The General Stanton Inn Flea Market is free. There is a $2. parking fee charged on Sundays only.
