Charlestown Budget Hearing May 5 at 7PM

The Town Council will hold a Budget Hearing at Town Hall on Monday night at 7pm

The 2014-2015 Tentative Budget as adopted by the Town Council on April 14 is as follows:
Total Municipal Budget =  $12,134,728
Total CHARIHO Budget = $14,351,417 (already approved by voters in April)
Grand Total Municipal and Schools Expenditures = $26,486,145

The proposed budget is a reduction 0f 0.24% from last year’s budget. Despite the decrease in spending, the tax rate will increase because property valuations have decreased. The 2014/2015 tax rate is estimated to be $9.87 per thousand of property valuation. According to the Budget Commission’s letter, “Individual homeowner’s real estate taxes will vary based on the Revaluation results. Charlestown’s tax rate will continue to be among the lowest in Rhode Island.”

Monday night’s hearing is for the discussion of the proposed budget and warrant items. The budget and any warrant items will go to the public for a vote at an all day referendum on June 2nd.

Two warrant items have been proposed.

WARRANT QUESTION #1:
Shall the Town Council of the Town of Charlestown be authorized to sell through a public bid process that certain parcel of Town-owned land located along Charlestown Beach Road known as Assessor’s Plat 9, Lot 19 for a sum of not less than Four Thousand Dollars ($4,000)?

WARRANT QUESTION #2:
Shall the Town Council of the Town of Charlestown be authorized through a public bid process to undertake repairs and improvements to the tennis courts located at Ninigret Park for an amount not to exceed Two Hundred Sixty Thousand Dollars ($260,000)?

The ballot on June 2 would have a question for the proposed budget and then two separate questions for the two warrant questions.

If you have any questions or comments about the budget or warrant questions, please attend the hearing on May 5.
