House Judiciary Committee Voted Unanimously To Remove Master Lever

The House Judiciary Committee voted unanimously on Tuesday night to pass the bill that abolishes the master lever from Rhode Island election ballots. Dozens of speakers spoke in favor of the bill and in opposition to the Master Lever. For the first time in anyone’s memory there was one speaker in favor of the master lever.

The Executive Director of Common Cause had data from National Science Foundation funded research that showed that the master lever does indeed cause voter confusion.

Other good goverment groups spoke and speakers brought up the support of the Secretary of State, Governor, Leutenant Governor, other statewide officers and nearly every candidate for statewide office.

The hearing room was full and an overflow crowd watched the hearing on a television screen.

The bill is expected to be brought up by the full House on Thursday.
