President Obama’s Budget Overturns Carcieri Vs Salazar

President Obama’s 2013 budget contains language to overturn Carcieri v. Salazar. The President’s budget includes language giving the Secretary of Interior authority to take land into trust for all federally recognized Indian Tribes regardless of when they were recognized. The Supreme Court ruling that preserves the right of Charlestown residents to vote on casino development in our town would be overturned. We hear the President’s budget does not have much chance of passing, but we are concerned this provision could remain. We will be watching the federal budget process carefully to see if legislation like this is inserted which could strip Charlestown residents of the rights all other Rhode Island residents enjoy.
